MG has been making steady progress in the Indian automotive landscape since launching the Hector in 2019. However, the British marque has historically been hesitant to introduce its most glamorous, halo-status models to the Indian market. That approach changed dramatically at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo. In a bold strategic move, MG unveiled two highly anticipated halo models: the opulent M9 people mover and the exhilarating MG Cyberster—a pure-electric two-seater roadster designed to stir emotions and challenge convention.
These two vehicles are the first to be launched under MG’s exclusive “Select” showroom portfolio. The Cyberster specifically targets a niche demographic of buyers seeking an accessible electric sports car that offers the visceral thrill of vehicles priced well above twice its cost.
But the critical question remains: Can the MG Cyberster truly deliver on these lofty aspirations? We spent a full day behind the wheel of this striking electric convertible to find out.
Design and Build Quality: An Arresting Presence
Initial Impressions:
The first encounter with the MG Cyberster is, quite simply, arresting. This is not a car that fades into the background of modern traffic. Even during our limited test period, the Cyberster drew significant attention. Several passersby approached me, curious to know more about this unusual vehicle. In an era dominated by SUVs and sedans, it is rare to encounter a car that captures the imagination so quickly, especially considering its specific price bracket.
The Wow Factor: Scissor Doors
One of the most defining exterior features that sets the MG Cyberster apart is its powered scissor doors. In a public setting, opening these doors guarantees a dramatic visual spectacle, turning heads and eliciting gasps from onlookers. Both doors operate smoothly at the touch of a button and feature built-in sensors to mitigate the risk of accidental contact.
However, the Cyberster’s appeal extends far beyond its theatrical doors.
Front Design:
The front fascia is clean, aesthetically pleasing, and distinctly modern. It features narrow LED headlights complemented by petal-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs). When paired with the wide grille, the front design adopts a distinctive “smiling face” that adds significant character. Muscular creases on the bonnet contribute to a perception of visual length, enhancing the vehicle’s athletic stance.
Side Profile:
From the side, the MG Cyberster sits low and wide, perfectly embodying the classic roadster proportions. The roofline flows seamlessly into the tapered rear, while the beefy 20-inch wheels fill the wheel arches adequately, resulting in a well-proportioned and balanced silhouette. This configuration reinforces the car’s sporty credentials, signaling performance and agility.
Rear Design:
The rear design effectively ties the overall aesthetic together. A full-width LED light bar runs across the tail, adding a sense of visual width without appearing overly gaudy. This horizontal lighting signature is complemented by striking arrow-shaped LED taillights. While undeniably bold, in my opinion, the design might have benefited from a slightly cleaner execution without these angular elements, but they certainly make the car memorable.
Build Quality:
The overall MG Cyberster build quality is impressive. There are no noticeable panel gaps, suggesting meticulous manufacturing standards. The doors feel weighty and robust—a significant indicator of quality. Similarly, both the bonnet and the boot lid feel solid and well-damped, reinforcing the sense of premium construction.
The Soft-Top Experience:
The Cyberster features an electrically operated soft-top roof that folds neatly into the bodywork. It can be opened or closed in approximately 10 seconds, operating smoothly and quietly. A key functional advantage is that the roof can be operated at speeds up to 50 km/h, making it one of the few convertibles on the market that doesn’t require you to pull over to put the roof down.
Color Options:
The MG Cyberster is available in four striking exterior color options:
Flare Red with a black roof
Nuclear Yellow with a black roof
Modern Beige with a red roof
Andes Grey with a red roof
While all color options exude elegance, the Nuclear Yellow and Flare Red versions tend to attract the most attention, perfectly complementing the car’s exuberant personality.
Interior Design and Build Quality
A Driver-Focused Cockpit:
If the exterior is sporty, the MG Cyberster interior elevates that feeling further. The cabin wraps around the driver like a bespoke cockpit, with nearly every element angled toward the driver’s seat. MG clearly prioritized a driver-centric experience here. From a pure design perspective, there is very little to critique.
The Triple-Screen Layout:
You sit low in the Cyberster, while the dashboard sits high, creating a dramatic perspective. The standout feature is the triple-screen digital display array, which curves inward to ensure all critical information remains within the driver’s immediate line of sight.
Legibility Issues: In most lighting conditions, the screens are crisp and easy to read. However, when the roof is down on a bright, sunny day, the brightness feels insufficient, making it difficult to read all the information. This is a common challenge for electric sports car convertibles, but MG’s implementation leaves something to be desired in terms of peak brightness.
The Steering Wheel and Controls:
The Cyberster features a flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in a dual-tone suede leather finish. It houses a red circular ‘Super Sport’ button, MG’s proprietary equivalent of launch control. This innovative feature simplifies the process of launching the car, allowing drivers to access maximum acceleration without navigating through complex menus.
Premium Materials:
Like the dashboard, the rest of the cabin feels premium, blending high-quality leather, suede, and soft-touch plastics effectively. While most functions are accessed via screens, MG intelligently retains physical toggles and switches for essential functions such as drive modes and regenerative braking levels. These controls have a satisfying, tactile feel that enhances the driver’s connection to the vehicle.
Seats and Accommodation:
In typical roadster fashion, the Cyberster offers seating for only two occupants. These are snug, supportive sport seats, perfectly suited to the car’s performance-focused nature.
For Taller Drivers: I am approximately six feet tall and found the driving position to be spot on, with ample legroom and just about adequate headroom even with the roof up. However, my colleague, who stands over 6.5 feet tall, found it difficult to get comfortable. His knees were grazing against the steering column, and his head lightly brushed against the roof. This, however, is not uncommon for compact electric sports car models; competitors like the Porsche Cayman/Boxster also feel cramped for exceptionally tall individuals.
Comfort and Ergonomics:
The seat cushioning is firm but not uncomfortable, suggesting suitability for longer drives. The seats are well-appointed, offering a comprehensive list of features including powered adjustment, ventilation, heating, and memory functions with a welcome retract feature.
Visibility:
Visibility is quite good for a low-slung roadster, although the thick rear pillars limit the rearward view considerably. This necessitates relying heavily on the camera system when reversing.
The Manual Mirror Anomaly:
Perhaps the most jarring element in the otherwise premium cabin is the manually adjustable inside rearview mirror. In a car offering Level 2 ADAS features and costing this much, the absence of an electrochromic or power-adjusted mirror feels like a cost-cutting measure that compromises the MG Cyberster feel. It also does not provide a complete rear view, making the 360-degree camera system indispensable for parking and reversing. Getting in and out is easier than expected for a roadster, but it still requires a bit of a duck and slide.
Storage and Practicality
Form Over Function:
This is not a car built for utility, and MG does not pretend otherwise. Cabin storage is minimal and strictly limited to the essentials. It features a small glovebox that opens via a button, a cubby hole on the central tunnel, a pair of cupholders, and limited space under the armrest.
Given the way the scissor doors open upward, the only accessible storage area is a small pocket with a closable lid, capable of storing only small items like a wallet or power bank. While this might deter family buyers, it is par for the course in the electric sports car segment.
Charging Options
Modern Convenience:
While the Cyberster might skimp on practicality, its charging options are more than adequate. It is equipped with a wireless charging pad placed conveniently in the central console. The pad holds the phone securely even during spirited driving, which is a nice convenience for those on the go.
In addition, there are both USB type-A and type-C ports available for both occupants. This allows for both wired phone charging and media connectivity, ensuring passengers remain connected throughout the journey.
